An automobile poses some unique challenges when it comes to getting well-tuned, perfectly aligned sound. Road noise and poor speaker placement create problems that require equalization, your subwoofer needs to be tuned to your vehicle, and the sound from the left speakers reaches the driver before sound from the right speakers, making it difficult to obtain a clear stereo image. AudioControl designed the DQDX processor to solve these problems and more.

Time alignment

The DQDX allows you to delay the signal from the appropriate speakers so the sound from all speakers reaches the driver at the same time, creating a clear stereo image. 10ms of delay is available for L/R alignment, and 35ms for front/sub alignment, allowing you to fine-tune the speaker response to the driver's position.

Ins and outs

The DQDX includes six input and output channels, arranged in pairs for front, rear, and sub. Each input pair features a seven-band graphic EQ to help solve tonal problems. The outputs use a built-in line driver with a maximum output of 7.5Vrms to drive your amplifier to full power without having to crank the amp's input gain control. The result? More volume with less noise and distortion.

The AudioControl DQDX features a 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley alignment crossover. This sophisticated crossover offers a flat response without any peak or dip around the crossover frequency and avoids the phase irregularities of lesser crossovers. You can select from six crossover frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 Hz, or a Defeat setting that turns the crossover off.

The package also includes the ACR3 control knob. This remote control offers two modes: Program mode allows the user to adjust the speaker delay, while Music mode adjusts the subwoofer level. This gives you even more control over the sound, and allows you to adjust the settings without accessing the unit directly.

Overview: The DQDX is a 6-channel active DSP with built-in signal delay circuitry, equalizer, and electronic crossover.

Input Gain: The input gains for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels are set independently. A clipping indicator LED helps you match the input setting on the DQDX to the output of the source unit.

Output Level: There are also separate line level outputs for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels, and another LED helps you maximize the output level without clipping the signal.

Balanced/Unbalanced Input: This is typically left in the unbalanced (factory) position. If the source unit looks for a ground through the RCA cables, the ground loop will likely introduces noise into the system. Switching the input jumper to balanced might remove it.

Subsonic Filter: The PFM (Programmed Frequency Match) jumper sets the subsonic filter frequency on the subwoofer output; choose 20 Hz, 30 Hz, or Off (factory position).

Ground Isolation: The power supply ground is switchable, in case of ground loop noise. The factory position is fully isolated (typically the best choice), but can be changed to Ground or 200Ω.

Front to Sub Jumper: If the source unit has only front and rear RCA outputs, set the Front to Sub jumper to On to feed the subwoofer output from the front input.

Crossover: The crossover routs the high-pass signal to the front and rear outputs, and the low-pass signal to the subwoofer output. The crossover point options are 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 65 Hz, 70 Hz, 75 Hz, 80 Hz, 85 Hz, 90 Hz, 95 Hz, 100 Hz, 125 Hz, 150 Hz, 175 Hz, 200 Hz, 250 Hz, 300 Hz, 400 Hz, and 500 Hz.

Time Alignment: By delaying the left speaker output a few milliseconds, the Signal Delay feature lets you effectively center the listener (driver) between the left and right speakers, thus optimizing the sound stage. The Signal Delay feature also allows adjustment of the front speaker output relative to the subwoofer, to effectively bring the subwoofer forward in the car. AudioControl offers a free set-up app for iPhone and iPad, available at the AudioControl website.

Equalizer: The front, rear, and subwoofer outputs have independent 7-band equalizers. The front and rear EQ bands are centered at 125 Hz, 175 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, and 8 kHz. The subwoofer bands are centered at 31.5 Hz, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 63 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, and 125 Hz. Each dial is continuously variable from -12 dB to +12 dB and there's a notch at the center position so it's easy to return to the flat setting.

Pink Noise Generator: A pink noise generator is built-in to help set the equalizer when using an RTA.

Remote: The included ACR-3 wired remote gives you easy access to the subwoofer output level. The remote is also used to program the Signal Delay circuit, and to bypass the signal processor, for an A/B comparison with and without the Signal Delay, equalizer, and crossover circuits. The remote is designed to be dash mounted, within reach of the driver; it can be mounted under the dash with the supplied bracket, or the bracket can be removed and the knob and LEDs can be custom mounted through the dash. Input/Output Level: The input gains and output levels are set independently for the front, rear, and sub channels. To help correctly set the input, a Maximized LED lights to indicate the input is just below clipping. The adjustable output level allows you to increase the source line voltage to the top of your amplifier's input range; up to 7.5 volts RMS.

Terminal Block: The power terminal is removable; the wiring is attached to the block, then the block is plugged into the DQDX. Each terminal block will accommodate wire up to 12 gauge.
